As a startup on a mission to make virtual lactation support accessible and efficient, SimpliFed needed to build a scalable, secure telehealth platform that could deliver a seamless experience for both patients and providers. With no digital system in place, the goal was to design from the ground up—but that came with its own set of challenges:
Handling sensitive patient health data required early investment in HIPAA, SOC 2, and GDPR compliance. SimpliFed needed robust security features like end-to-end encryption, role-based access controls, audit logging, and MFA—all while balancing speed of development and limited startup resources.
A critical feature was the ability to match patients with lactation consultants based on factors like location, insurance coverage, availability, and consultation type. Creating an automated system that could handle this dynamic matching logic was key to reducing delays and manual intervention.
As a fully remote care provider, SimpliFed required a telehealth infrastructure that supported secure, low-latency video consultations. The system needed to be both HIPAA-compliant and user-friendly for patients and consultants who may be new to digital healthcare.
To deliver high-quality, personalized care, lactation consultants needed access to patient medical histories. SimpliFed needed to integrate with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems like Athena, enabling smooth data exchange before, during, and after consultations.
Though still in early stages, the product had to be built with scalability in mind. As patient demand and provider onboarding grew, the platform needed to support high volumes of data and sessions without performance issues, while remaining cost-efficient and resilient.
We collaborated with SimpliFed to design and launch an MVP for a fully digital, HIPAA-compliant lactation support platform—enabling remote consultations, patient-provider matching, and secure health data management. Once the MVP proved successful, we scaled the platform to support a growing user base and more advanced features, laying a strong foundation for long-term growth and flexibility.
Get the full case studyWe developed a HIPAA-compliant telehealth infrastructure from the ground up, enabling expecting and new mothers to consult with lactation specialists remotely. Using Agora SDK, we implemented a low-latency video conferencing system that supported smooth, secure consultations with high availability—broadening SimpliFed’s reach and delivering flexibility to its users.
In addition to video calls, we built a secure encrypted chat feature to enable asynchronous communication between patients and consultants. This allowed users to share concerns, follow-up questions, and important updates before or after their appointments—enhancing engagement while maintaining privacy and HIPAA compliance.
As a startup building its platform from scratch, SimpliFed needed an infrastructure that could grow with its vision. We architected the backend using Node.js with Express and implemented a microservices-inspired modular design, ensuring flexibility, performance, and clean service separation. GraphQL Apollo was used for efficient data querying across services and frontends.
Given the sensitivity of healthcare data, we implemented key compliance measures from the beginning. These included end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication (MFA), role-based access controls (RBAC), and real-time audit logging to meet HIPAA, SOC 2, and GDPR standards. Our secure-by-design approach ensured both platform and user trust from launch onward.
We introduced an intelligent appointment scheduling engine that dynamically matched patients with available lactation consultants based on multiple criteria—location, insurance, timing, and consultation type. To ensure consultants were well-prepared, we integrated the system with Athena EMR, giving providers real-time access to patient history and medical context ahead of each appointment.
SimpliFed’s existing monolithic system was replaced with a microservices architecture, significantly improving performance, scalability, and fault tolerance. We leveraged Node.js with Express for backend services, ensuring modularity and independent scaling of key platform components. GraphQL Apollo was integrated to enable efficient data fetching and communication between microservices, reducing API overhead and improving response times. This transition eliminated performance bottlenecks, optimized resource allocation, and enhanced overall system reliability.
Given SimpliFed’s need for strict regulatory compliance, we incorporated enterprise-level security measures to protect sensitive patient data. The platform was built with end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and role-based access controls (RBAC) to ensure secure access and data privacy. Additionally, we implemented automated compliance tracking with real-time audit logging and monitoring, allowing SimpliFed to continuously meet HIPAA, SOC 2, and GDPR standards.
We replaced SimpliFed’s manual appointment process with an AI-driven scheduling engine that automatically matches patients with the most relevant lactation consultants based on factors such as location, availability, insurance coverage, and consultation type. This smart scheduling significantly reduced wait times and improved operational efficiency, offering both on-demand and pre-scheduled appointment options tailored to user preferences
To support more personalized and clinically informed care, we integrated Athena EMR into the platform. This allowed providers to access real-time patient medical histories during consultations and securely update records afterward. The integration also automated data synchronization across sessions, eliminating manual entry, reducing administrative burden, and ensuring care continuity through a centralized health data flow.
To address data retrieval inefficiencies, we migrated unstructured patient records into a structured PostgreSQL database, enabling faster access to patient records. This ensured scalable and secure data storage, optimizing queries for quick retrieval of patient information. Additionally, GraphQL Apollo enabled efficient data exchange, minimizing delays in accessing critical healthcare data. These improvements enhanced data organization, analytics capabilities, and overall system efficiency, ensuring that patient records were secure, easily accessible, and future-proofed for SimpliFed’s continued growth.
