To expand operations and improve service delivery, SimpliFed required a robust, secure, and highly efficient telehealth platform. The company faced several challenges that hindered its ability to scale and optimize the patient-provider experience.
SimpliFed’s platform was built on a monolithic architecture, which became a significant bottleneck as user demand increased. With a growing number of patients and lactation consultants joining the platform, the system struggled with scalability, performance reliability, and efficient resource allocation. The rigid structure made it difficult to scale specific services independently, leading to frequent slowdowns and operational inefficiencies.
As a telehealth provider, SimpliFed needed to comply with strict data protection regulations, including HIPAA, SOC 2, and GDPR. However, the existing system lacked essential security measures, such as end-to-end encryption, role-based access controls (RBAC), and automated logging for audit trails. Additionally, the absence of multi-factor authentication (MFA) exposed patient data to potential unauthorized access and security threats.
The patient-provider matching and scheduling system relied on a manual process, which was slow, inefficient, and prone to errors. Patients experienced delays in finding the right lactation consultant, and administrative teams had to manually handle bookings, increasing workload and operational inefficiencies. The platform lacked an automated appointment system, preventing dynamic matching based on location, insurance, availability, and consultation type.
Lactation consultants needed access to patient history and medical records to provide personalized and informed care. However, the platform lacked Electronic Health Records (EHR) integration, forcing providers to manually input and retrieve patient data, which was time-consuming and prone to errors. Without an automated and secure data exchange, the consultation process remained fragmented and inefficient.
SimpliFed’s platform did not support video conferencing or remote consultations, requiring all appointments to be conducted in person. This limitation significantly restricted access for new and expecting mothers, especially those in remote areas or those unable to visit a provider physically. The absence of a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth solution prevented real-time virtual consultations, limiting the platform’s ability to scale and offer more flexible, accessible care options.
SimpliFed’s patient data was stored in unstructured formats, making retrieval slow and inefficient. The disorganized database structure resulted in delayed access to patient records, hindering consultants’ ability to make informed decisions quickly. Additionally, migrating large volumes of existing patient data to a structured system posed a risk of data loss, downtime, and operational disruptions.
To address SimpliFed’s challenges, we designed and developed a scalable, HIPAA-compliant digital healthcare platform that streamlined patient-provider matching, secure data handling, and virtual lactation consultations. Our solution enabled greater accessibility, automation, and compliance, allowing SimpliFed to expand its services while improving user experience for both patients and providers.
Get the full case studySince SimpliFed’s platform initially lacked video consultation capabilities, we introduced a fully integrated, HIPAA-compliant telehealth system, allowing new and expecting mothers to access virtual lactation support from anywhere. Using Agora SDK, we built a high-quality video conferencing solution that enabled secure, real-time consultations with minimal latency. Additionally, we implemented encrypted chat functionality, allowing patients and providers to communicate securely before and after appointments. These enhancements significantly expanded SimpliFed’s reach, making lactation support more accessible and flexible for patients
SimpliFed’s existing monolithic system was replaced with a microservices architecture, significantly improving performance, scalability, and fault tolerance. We leveraged Node.js with Express for backend services, ensuring modularity and independent scaling of key platform components. GraphQL Apollo was integrated to enable efficient data fetching and communication between microservices, reducing API overhead and improving response times. This transition eliminated performance bottlenecks, optimized resource allocation, and enhanced overall system reliability.
Given SimpliFed’s need for strict regulatory compliance, we incorporated enterprise-level security measures to protect sensitive patient data. The platform was built with end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and role-based access controls (RBAC) to ensure secure access and data privacy. Additionally, we implemented automated compliance tracking with real-time audit logging and monitoring, allowing SimpliFed to continuously meet HIPAA, SOC 2, and GDPR standards.
The manual appointment booking system was replaced with an AI-driven scheduling engine that dynamically connects patients with lactation consultants based on location, availability, insurance coverage, and consultation type. This system eliminated scheduling inefficiencies, reduced wait times, and provided both on-demand and pre-scheduled appointment options. Seamless integration with Athena EMR ensured that providers had real-time access to relevant patient records before each consultation, allowing for personalized and efficient care.
To eliminate manual data entry inefficiencies, we integrated Athena EMR into SimpliFed’s platform, enabling a centralized and automated data flow. This integration allowed lactation consultants to instantly retrieve patient medical history before consultations, improving care quality and decision-making. It also enabled secure updates to consultation notes, reducing administrative workload while ensuring data accuracy. Additionally, automated patient data synchronization maintained continuity of care without requiring manual intervention.
To address data retrieval inefficiencies, we migrated unstructured patient records into a structured PostgreSQL database, enabling faster access to patient records. This ensured scalable and secure data storage, optimizing queries for quick retrieval of patient information. Additionally, GraphQL Apollo enabled efficient data exchange, minimizing delays in accessing critical healthcare data. These improvements enhanced data organization, analytics capabilities, and overall system efficiency, ensuring that patient records were secure, easily accessible, and future-proofed for SimpliFed’s continued growth.
