Heartbeat Health set out to build a digital-first cardiology platform from the ground up—beginning with a chatbot for patient interactions, quick check-ins, and Athena EHR integration. As the platform gained traction and the vision evolved, they pivoted toward a more comprehensive telehealth offering. To support this shift, several key capabilities were required to deliver a scalable and compliant virtual care experience:
Handling sensitive patient health data required strict compliance with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and HITECH. The platform needed secure access controls, encrypted communication, and data privacy measures to protect confidential medical information.
Real-time syncing with Athena was essential for centralized patient records, smooth check-ins, and efficient data flow. While Athena offers standard APIs, building around its limitations and ensuring clean, uninterrupted data exchange required thoughtful implementation.
With a rapidly growing user base of cardiologists and patients, the system needed to handle an increasing volume of telehealth sessions, patient check-ins, and real-time data streams without performance bottlenecks.
The telehealth platform needed to seamlessly integrate:
As a pioneering virtual cardiology practice, Heartbeat Health needed to educate and onboard both patients and providers on the new digital experience. Ensuring an intuitive user interface, clear workflows, and seamless telehealth interactions was critical for adoption.
The platform required the ability to stream and sync patient vitals—like ECG, heart rate, and blood pressure—in real time during appointments to aid cardiologist decision-making.
The telehealth solution had to be highly available and resilient, ensuring zero interruptions during remote consultations, especially for patients with critical heart conditions.
To meet these challenges, we built a HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based telehealth platform that addressed the technical, regulatory, and operational challenges by implementing the following:
Get the full case studyRecognizing the need for immediate and secure communication, we developed a custom chat engine that allowed real-time messaging between patients and cardiologists for follow-ups and general inquiries. The chat system ensured secure prescription and treatment discussions within an encrypted environment, maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations. To accommodate busy schedules, we enabled asynchronous communication, allowing doctors to respond at their convenience without disrupting workflows.
We designed and built a scalable telehealth platform that empowered cardiologists across multiple practices to conduct virtual appointments with patients nationwide. The system included live video consultations with high-quality streaming to support remote diagnosis, ensuring that patients could receive expert cardiac care without geographic constraints. Virtual seminars or educational sessions for patients were hosted on the platform to learn about heart health, lifestyle modifications, and medication management, fostering patient engagement and empowerment.
To enhance operational efficiency, we developed automated patient check-ins and appointment scheduling, reducing administrative workload and allowing a seamless transition into digital healthcare.
To overcome the challenges associated with Athena EHR’s rigid structure, we built a custom middleware solution that facilitated real-time data exchange between Heartbeat Health’s platform and Athena EHR. This integration allowed instant updates to patient records before, during, and after consultations, ensuring cardiologists always had access to the most up-to-date information. We also automated data entry processes, reducing manual effort and minimizing errors in patient records. By synchronizing patient history and treatment plans, our solution created a centralized, efficient system for managing cardiology care.
Given the sensitive nature of patient health data, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and HITECH regulations was a top priority. To achieve this, we implemented end-to-end encryption for all communications, ensuring that patient records, chat conversations, and video consultations remained secure. We introduced role-based access controls, restricting sensitive data access to authorized users only, minimizing security risks. Additionally, we leveraged secure cloud storage solutions to comply with stringent healthcare regulations while ensuring the platform remained scalable and efficient.
To support continuous remote monitoring, we integrated the platform with wearable health devices, allowing cardiologists to track live patient vitals during consultations. The system provided real-time heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG monitoring, enabling physicians to make informed decisions without requiring in-person visits. We also implemented proactive alerts, notifying cardiologists of abnormal vitals, allowing for timely intervention. By enabling long-term trend analysis, the system improved chronic disease management, helping doctors tailor treatment plans based on historical health data.
A critical aspect of the project was ensuring that both patients and healthcare providers could easily adopt and navigate the platform. We designed an intuitive, user-friendly interface that required minimal training, ensuring a smooth transition from traditional care models to telehealth. Features such as one-click virtual appointments reduced friction in telehealth adoption, making it easier for patients to connect with their cardiologists. Additionally, automated appointment reminders improved patient adherence, reducing missed consultations and enhancing overall care outcomes.
To support future growth and security, we leveraged Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for fast, secure, and compliant data storage. The system was built with role-based access controls, ensuring that patient data was protected from unauthorized access while maintaining flexibility for healthcare providers.
To enhance clinical decision-making, we developed an interactive analytics dashboard powered by AI-driven insights. The system enabled automated risk stratification, allowing cardiologists to proactively identify high-risk patients based on longitudinal health trends. Custom reporting tools helped providers analyze patient data more effectively, supporting data-backed medical decisions that improved outcomes. Additionally, we integrated AI-powered fraud detection within the analytics layer, minimizing security risks and ensuring compliance with healthcare data protection standards.
